SKF Automotive has announced the successful industry adaptation of its new Hub Bearing Unit (HBU) wheel bearing.
This new HBU has a blend of two different types of rolling bearings in one unit, a unique combination of ball and tapered roller elements. The innovative design provides greater strength and is 10% lighter than conventional wheel bearings.
In addition, the HBU Ball/Taper Wheel Bearing features low friction capabilities that deliver a remarkable 30% reduction in friction compared to current competitive offerings for the same vehicle category. In serial production since 2022, the volume of these ball-taper bearings is moving toward 1 million per year and growing.
Innovative design and environmental impact
The HBU Ball/Taper wheel bearing is designed to support the demands of EV Pick-up trucks and Vans, which require low friction and high-speed capabilities. The hybrid nature of this bearing, combining taper bearing and ball bearing elements, allows it to handle increased vehicle weight and performance demands effectively. The reduction in friction translates directly into increased running miles per battery charge, which aligns with SKF’s commitment to environmental sustainability and contributing to a better tomorrow.
Unique market offering
SKF Automotive’s HBU Ball/Taper wheel bearing is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, and environmental responsibility.
Awarded projects and market expansion
SKF’s innovative approach has led to significant business awards for the new HBU, including a major contract in the USA with an initial volume of 1.5 million bearings per year. Additionally, another project has been awarded in Europe for light commercial vehicle applications. The new bearing concept is also gaining substantial traction in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market.
