Are you getting your share of brake jobs?

Extensive research shows a broad gulf in the market share of brake jobs gained by aftermarket facilities depending on the age of four to 12 year old vehicles, and a similar steep curve depending on mileage.

According to the most recent JD Power Canada Customer Service Index – Long Term Study, while the indepedent aftermarket collecctively attacts only 33% of the brake jobs on vehicles four to seven years old, there is a 20% incease in market share versus dealers for vehicles eight to 12 years old. (See the chart for a more detailed breakdown.)

There are some stark differences in how the aftermarket performs versus dealers by Canadian region, too.

Overall, for vehicles four to 12 years old, the Canadian national average dealer/aftermarket split is 56/44, but in Western Canada, that tilts in dealers’ favour to 63/37, and in Eastern Canada in an even 50/50 split.,

Interestingly, despite the lower overall share of market that aftermarket outlets have in Western Canada, “Branded Aftermarket” outlets held a 13% share, only one percent less than in Eastern Canada, where the aftermarket holds an overall larger share.

Not to be overlooked in these details is the fact that Independent Aftermarket Service outlets dominate the aftermarket share, regardless of region, regardless of vehicle age group considered by the survey.
